CSA Shares Available for 2015!

Butter Hill Farm grows all natural and chemical free vegetables using organic methods. During the course of the farming season there is a lot of variety and change in the CSA share. However, we aim to have salad mix every week! A small share contains 5 or 6 items and a large share contains 9 or 10.

Here are some examples from the 2014 season. In the spring a June 3rd large share contained: salad mix, collards, scallions, romaine lettuce, spinach, cilantro, chard, garlic scapes, mustard greens and radishes.

In the summer a September 3rd small share was: salad mix, sweet corn, red peppers, heirloom tomatoes, green beans and garlic.

In the fall an October 29th large share was: salad mix, bok choi, carrots, fingerling potatoes, delicata squash, peppers, dill, scallions, hakurei turnips and endive.

Where you can pick up your CSA share

There are two pickup days to choose from: Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Wednesdays - you can pick up your share at the Atlas Bottle Works  in Lawrenceville from 3 to 7pm.
Saturdays - you can pickup your share at our farm stand at the Bloomfield Saturday Farmers' Market in Bloomfield. Pickup hours are during the market and run from 9am to 1pm.

How much it costs and how long the season is

The Butter Hill Farm CSA season is a bit longer than other CSAs at 25 weeks or six months. Our CSA runs from the 3rd week of May until the first week of November. There are two sizes for the CSA share.

• A small share is designed for one person and costs $350 for the 25 week season. This amounts to $14 a week.
• A large share is designed for two people to share and costs $600 for the 25 week season, This amounts to $24 a week.

Market CSA

This year we are also offering for the first time a market CSA share option. You pay up front just like a usual CSA share, but instead of getting a box of produce each week you can pick and choose what you get and don't have to worry about who will pick up your share if you are going out of town. This option is for 24 weeks and is only available at the Bloomfield Saturday Farmers' Market.

The cost is $336 (since its a shorter season than our standard shares) but you get a 10% bonus for buying up front. You will begin the season with a credit of $370. Each week as you buy vegetables we will deduct the amount from your credit.

Payment Plan

While we encourage you to pay all at once, we are happy to offer monthly payment plans that fit your budget. You can divide your CSA share payment into up to three monthly payments.

Food Stamps

You can pay for your CSA share with food stamps! Contact us for more details: ButterHillFarm@gmail.com.

Worktrade CSA

Butter Hill Farm has a worktrade CSA program. During the 25 week season, a limited number of worktraders can work either 4 hours a week in exchange for a small share or 7 hours a week for a large share (you may split a large share and the workload with a friend if you like). Each worktrader signs up for one shift a week. Pickup is exactly the same as for a paying share.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about growing vegetables and where our food comes from. Not to mention a great opportunity to be outside and have lots of fun in the dirt! You have to be quick to get one though, these spots fill up fast!

History of Butter Hill Farm

Butter Hill Farm is a new farm for the 2013 season from Nick of Knotweed Urban Farm.

Farmer Nick has worked on organic vegetable farms for several years and in 2012 got the opportunity to start his first farm. Along with a couple of friends they started Knotweed Urban Farm at the former Mildred's Daughters garden site located in Stanton Heights, Pittsburgh, PA. This was a diversified vegetable farm with a 20 person CSA, a market stand and sold to many local restaurants. The space functioned as a farm incubator with others at the land trying out a rabbit and duck businesses, a tree nursery and growing grains. However, after an extremely successful first season the incubator project came to an end.

After searching for only a few months Nick found available farm land in the nearby suburb of Allison Park, PA. This is a beautiful place with spring fed ponds, woods, hills, pasture and several old style farm buildings. The land hasn't been farmed in about 20 years but has been in owner's family for generations. Butter Hill Farm is leasing one acre for the 2013 season and Nick is working hard to get it into shape for the coming growing season!

Butter Hill Farm is committed to using all natural and organic methods of growing vegetables. The soil is the key to plant health, produce yields and a healthy environment for our community. In order to ensure soil health we use cover cropping and biological fertilizers. We aim to produce the best tasting healthiest vegetables!
